Another Stage outside Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Pakistan, known as the highest judicial authority in the country, has found itself at the center of controversy once again. This time, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a coalition of opposition parties, has taken to the streets of Islamabad to voice its dissent against what it perceives as preferential treatment given to Prime Minister Imran Khan by the judiciary. The protests have transformed the area outside the Supreme Court into another stage for the ongoing political drama gripping the nation.

The PDM, comprising various political parties such as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and others, was formed in 2020 with the aim of challenging the government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The coalition alleges that the judiciary has displayed favoritism towards Khan, leading to an erosion of the principles of justice and impartiality.

In recent weeks, the PDM has intensified its campaign against what it considers the judiciary's bias towards the ruling party. Thousands of supporters from across the country have congregated outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad, turning the area into a vibrant hub of dissent. The demonstrators, waving party flags and holding banners with slogans decrying the alleged preferential treatment, have transformed the vicinity into another stage for political expression.

The PDM's primary contention is that the judiciary has been lenient in its treatment of Prime Minister Imran Khan and his government. Critics argue that court decisions on cases involving the ruling party have often been swift and favorable, while cases involving opposition figures have faced delays and alleged bias. The opposition coalition alleges that these actions undermine the principles of justice and create a perception of partiality.

Apart from protesting the perceived preferential treatment, the PDM is also advocating for comprehensive judicial reforms. They argue that the judiciary should be independent and free from any political influence, ensuring that justice is dispensed fairly and transparently. The coalition has called for reforms that address issues such as appointments, accountability, and the reduction of delays in the judicial system.

The ruling party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, has dismissed the allegations made by the PDM. The government asserts that the judiciary functions independently and any claims of preferential treatment are baseless. The PTI maintains that the protests are merely an attempt by the opposition to disrupt the democratic process and undermine the legitimacy of the government.

The ongoing protests by the Pakistan Democratic Movement outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan reflect the deepening political polarization and growing tensions in the country. The opposition coalition's allegations of preferential treatment by the judiciary to Prime Minister Imran Khan have sparked a national debate on the principles of justice and impartiality. As the demonstrations continue, it remains to be seen how this contentious issue will be resolved and what implications it may have for Pakistan's democratic future.
