Kenyan high court rules police killing of journalist Arshad Sharif unlawful

In a landmark decision by the High Court of Kajiado, Kenya, justice was finally served for journalist Arshad Sharif, tragically killed by police in 2022. The court ruled that the police acted unlawfully, dismissing claims of mistaken identity put forth by authorities. Arshad, known for his support of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, faced persecution in Pakistan, leading him to seek refuge in the UAE and later Kenya, where he met his untimely death.

The verdict, delivered by Judge Stella Mutuku, emphasized the violation of Arshad's fundamental rights to life and safety. The court's decision underscores the importance of upholding human rights and justice, holding the Kenyan government accountable with a compensation order of 10 million Kenyan Shillings, equivalent to approximately 21.7 million Pakistani Rupees, to be paid to his widow, Javeria Siddique, and other petitioners.

This ruling not only seeks justice for Arshad Sharif but also sets a precedent for ensuring accountability and protection of journalists worldwide.
