Shandur Polo Festival kicks off today in Upper Chitral

Shandur, Upper Chitral: The much-anticipated three-day Shandur Polo Festival is set to begin today in the scenic Shandur Valley of District Upper Chitral. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA) has finalized all necessary arrangements to ensure the grand success of this internationally renowned event.

The festival, often dubbed the "Roof of the World" due to its location at the world's highest polo ground at Shandur Pass (approximately 3,700 meters above sea level), will feature thrilling polo matches between traditional rivals: teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. These freestyle polo matches are a hallmark of the festival, showcasing the raw and unadulterated form of the sport.

The Shandur Polo Festival is a collaborative effort involving the Pakistan Army, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Authority, local district administrations, police, and Chitral Scouts. This joint endeavor aims to ensure the successful execution of the event and provide a memorable experience for all attendees, including a large number of local and international tourists who have already started arriving in the region. A tent village has been established at the venue to accommodate guests, and comprehensive security arrangements are in place.

Beyond the exciting polo matches, the festival will also showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region through vibrant cultural performances, traditional music shows, and other recreational activities. These elements combine to create a unique celebration of sport, culture, and high-altitude adventure.

The Shandur Polo Festival is officially scheduled to run from June 20 to June 22, culminating in a fiercely contested final match between the "A" teams of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. This annual spectacle continues to draw large crowds and extensive media coverage, cementing its status as a significant event on Pakistan's tourism calendar.
