Babar Azam's Historic Milestone: First Asian Batter to Reach 3,000 Runs in ICC World Test Championship

Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam, who has been under intense criticism in recent months, made a stunning comeback on Sunday by achieving a historic milestone during the ongoing Test match against South Africa at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

The prolific right-hander became the first Asian cricketer to score 3,000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC).

Needing just two runs to reach the landmark, Babar achieved the feat in style, striking a boundary off Senuran Muthusamy’s delivery in the 49th over of Pakistan’s first innings.

His elegant shot not only brought up the milestone but also reaffirmed his stature as one of the most consistent performers in modern Test cricket.

Before Babar, the elite 3,000-run club in the WTC era included four Australian batters — Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, and Usman Khawaja — and three Englishmen — Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Zak Crawley.

Babar is now the eighth batter overall and the first from Asia to cross the 3,000-run mark in this championship.

In the list of leading Asian run-getters in the WTC, Babar is followed by India’s Test captain Shubman Gill, who has scored 2,826 runs in 39 matches.

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant stands third with 2,731 runs, while veteran opener Rohit Sharma — now retired from Test cricket — has accumulated 2,716 runs.
